SRM student develops Corona App – SRMIST (SRM Insitute of Science and Technology) student Anupam Tiwari has come out with an app that provides live information about coronavirus.
The app is named ‘CoronApp’ and Anupam is currently doing his startup semester in mechatronics (electrical engineering and computer science-EECS) at UC Berkley. The idea of coming with the CoronApp was generated by Anupam and his team mates. His team comprises His team consists of Anushka Purohit, Sahil Mehta, Ean Hall, Akonkwa Mubagwa, Manuel Smith, Daniel Smith and Sevith Rao.

‘Coronavirus is causing concern everywhere, so I thought that coming up with something useful in this regard will be of great use,’ said Anupam. He created the prototype overnight and showed it to his friends.

They liked the whole idea and gave me a helping hand to take the work further and that is how the app has seen the light of the day. CoronApp for mobile browsers, now available, allows users to click on red dots on a map to get updates on virus cases.
‘We wanted to create a platform that had all the information one should know about the Coronavirus, from statistics to basic precautions and one can also input information manually.’

The app is updated in real-time as it is powered by data provided by the CDC and WHO, he said. It integrates COVID-19 data from Johns Hopkins University, the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization (WHO) and a Twitter feed provides the latest curated news.
Things were not that easy, says Anupam. The work was quite tiresome. ‘When we were developing this application, to begin with, there were no other similar applications.’
SRM student develops Corona App – There were only websites that provided chunks and chunks of information. We spent sleepless nights and put massive brainpower on this. We gave ourselves one week because time was sensitive. In the end, everything was worth it, said Anupam Tiwari.
He quickly reminds the difference between his app and the ones that already exist. All apps seem to focus only on world data but our application provides people with localized user experience. Using the phone’s location, the Geo-map automatically zooms into the user’s location on the map, allowing them to see the reports of cases around them.

The proud student got congratulated from SRMIST founder chancellor Dr T.R. Paarivendhar. SRMIST pro-chancellors Ravi Pachamoothoo and Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan and chancellor Dr. Sandeep Sancheti and registrar N. Sethuraman also praised the student for his work.
