IISER Thiruvananthapuram conducts 11th convocation

IISER Thiruvananthapuram conducted its 11th convocation on 23 July 2023. Former chairman of ISRO Dr K Radhakrishnan graced the occasion as chief guest.

The graduation day at IISER Thiruvananthapuram was indeed a grand affair. Prof. Arvind Anant Natu, Chairperson, Board of Governors of IISER Thiruvananthapuram presided over the occasion.

IISER ThiruvananthapuramA total of 189 BS-MS, 73 MSc, 21 MS (Research), 36 PhD and 12 integrated PhD students were awarded the degrees in the 11th Convocation.

Prof. J. N. Moorthy, Director, IISER Thiruvananthapuram presented the report on the developments and progress of the institute. Dr. Radhakrishnan and the Chairperson of the Board, Prof. Natu jointly gave away the Institute gold medal, Director’s gold medal for academic excellence, school gold and silver medals, best undergraduate researcher medals, the Institute cultural award, and certificates of distinction to the meritorious students.

Mr. Sharang Rajesh Iyer received the Institute Gold Medal, while Mr. Ananthu M. received the Director’s Gold Medal for Academic Excellence.

Convocation address at IISER Thiruvananthapuram

Dr. K. Radhakrishnan delivered the convocation address. He stressed upon the idea of IISER as a game-changer for Indian science and urged the graduates to be the ambassadors for their alma mater.

The Chief Guest advised the graduates to contribute to addressing the key scientific, technical, social and environmental issues that our world is facing today. He highlighted the role of ‘Choice’ as the most powerful tool that enables one to go from where one is today to where one wants to be tomorrow.

Each one of us should live up to leave a legacy and make a difference for the society around us, he said at the convocation of IISER Thiruvananthapuram.

Prof. Arvind Anant Natu, Chairperson, Board of Governors of IISER Thiruvananthapuram congratulated the graduating students on their academic achievements and wished them all success in their future endeavors.

Prof. Natu mentioned that the Indian education system is at crossroads and is undergoing a sudden massive expansion and liberalization. However, caution is warranted to ensure that there is no content dilution, he stated.

In the context of globalization of education, he highlighted the importance of Indian universities setting up campuses abroad, hiring foreign academicians as faculty and foreign students considering our universities as attractive options, he said during the convocation at IISER Thiruvananthapuram.

Faculty

Over the years, IISER Thiruvananthapuram graduates have taken up faculty positions in institutes of national importance such as Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology, and foreign universities such as North Carolina State University, and University of Texas, El Paso.

They have also been placed in organizations that include Indian Civil Service and various industrial organizations.

That IISER Thiruvananthapuram is fast becoming a reputed Institute is increasingly reflected from the achievements of the faculty and its student community.

IISER Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM) is dedicated to scientific research and science education of international standards. Traditionally, teaching has been segregated from research in undergraduate science curricula in our country.

IISER Thiruvananthapuram was founded in 2008. The institute aims to provide high quality education in modern science, integrating it with outstanding research at the undergraduate level itself, and to develop a spirit of enquiry cutting across disciplines.

IISER Thiruvananthapuram is an autonomous institution offering a five-year BS-MS programme in addition to iPh.D and Ph.D. programmes in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and inter-disciplinary areas.

The faculty are engaged in research in the frontier areas of basic sciences, with a high degree of autonomy and creativity. The institute hosts regular colloquia and lectures by distinguished academicians and scientists.

Such events give students opportunities to meet and interact with world leaders in different scientific disciplines.
